Last month, at the Oak Tree Grand Prix here at the Virginia International Raceway, BMW’s Team RLL performed well and earned the fourth and fifth spots. This 2.75-hour race is part of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).
The two BMW cars in the race were No. 56 BMW Z4 GTE and No. 55 BMW Z4 GTE. Joey Hand started the race in No. 56 in the third-place spot and hand pitted the car on lap 36 to Muller. Muller then drove the next 27 laps in fifth place, gained the fourth place spot on lap 63, but then lost it again 13 laps later. Finally, on the last lap, Muller gained back fourth place in a hard fought race.
Muller’s great racing and respectable finish allowed him to keep his second place standing in driver championship points. He is 16 points behind the leader.
No. 55 had an ever harder race. Bill Auberlen started the race at the front of the pack, but had to make an unexpected pit stop when the left-side door hinge failed. He then swapped the driver’s seat with Maxime Martin who then rejoined the race in tenth place, a full two laps behind the leaders. Over the course of the final 45 minutes of the race, he managed to maneuver up five positions to finish in fifth place.
What an exciting race! Join with us at Casey BMW in congratulating BMW Team RLL on their outstanding performance.
